Quick Transcript:
Hi, everybody. This is Robert Brighton and thanks for clicking on What's In It for Me. I guess I know why you clicked on that one. I would've clicked on it as well because you might be wondering why a course called Reading and Writing with Robert Brighton could be valuable to you, especially if you're not going to become a writer.
Or if you don't read a lot, since most people don't read a lot and most people don't become writers. And so, first of all, do you need a course to learn how to be better with the written and spoken word? Maybe I can rephrase it that way. I think we can all improve our use of language, whether you become or are aspiring to be a full-time writer or whether you're simply interacting with other human beings at work or socially or at home.
The word, the spoken word, the written word has enormous power. I think you would agree with that. And it can be used for good and it can be used for ill. And I think it's important to respect the word so much that we, we learn how to use it the best way we can. It is one of spoken language, written, especially written language are two of the hallmarks of the human species. If you think about what sets the human species apart from everything else on the planet, it's the ability to formulate thoughts and express them in speech and in writing. It's an amazing, amazing gift, and it's not one to be wasted. Now, if you are an aspiring writer in this course, you're going to find everything I've learned the hard way over 25 years.
So first of all. People always say, What's In It for Me? Well, it saves you time and money. This is where it's going to save you a lot of time because it took me 25 years to learn all this stuff the hard way, and I'm a person of at least average intelligence. You are too, I have no doubt. And so why spend 25 years when I could teach you everything it took me that long to learn in a few months. Okay? That's going to save you a tremendous amount of time. And if at the end of the day you go through the whole course and you use only a portion of it, what's the harm? You still have improved your skills as a writer. Whether it's a writer of nonfiction, fiction, whether it's writing emails, social media, it doesn't matter.
I'm going to go over everything you need to know about how to formulate and encapsulate and express your thoughts in words - spoken or written. It’s a very important skill and for the very, very low, low price of becoming a member, I think you'll get your money's worth out of it. But even after a few months, if you decide that it's not for you, you're only out the price of lunch at McDonald's.
So there's not a whole lot of risk here for you. Now, another thing that you might wanna know about What's In It for You is that you will be getting an inside look at why writing and communicating are much easier than people want you to believe. There's a whole academic industry, and I mean universities, MFA programs, online courses, that wants to make you think that it's hard to be a good communicator, that it's hard to be a good writer, that it's hard to get published. But you know what? These things do require work, but there's no mystery to any of it. We, as humans are born with every one of the skills and abilities we need to master this art.
This does not require something that you don't already have. All you need is a teacher that knows how to show you the way to find these things inside yourself. And I think I can do that for you. And I think I can do that at a very, very modest cost to you. So I think there's a lot here for you, and I think that there's very little risk in giving it a try.
I would urge you to do it. Join us in the Members area. Follow along with Reading and Writing with Robert Brighton. You're going to find a lot there. Anything you want me to add, any topic you want me to take up, just ask and I'll do it. If I know something about it, if I don't know something about it, I'll tell you.
So I think there's a lot in it for you and I'm glad you're here and I hope you'll stay. So with that I hope to see you in Reading and Writing with Robert Brighton.
